toughen up

This is one of the most extraordinary images I have ever seen. It was sent to me this week by a friend, it having been sent to him by a friend, and now I’m sharing it with you.

Taken at the end of the war, it shows a young boy terrified by the sounds of battle… so terrified, in fact, that he has pissed his pants. The older man to the right is exhorting him to toughen up, but I think the boy should just go home to his mother. Life will become hard enough in the weeks, months, and years to come.

“You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you’ll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.”
 ~ Siegfried Sassoon
(from “Suicide in the Trenches”
in Counter-Attack: and Other Poems, 1919)
I did a photo essay three years ago called “Child Soldiers,” and in my opinion this picture is the best of the best.

The child’s reaction to purposeful violence is the sane and instinctive one. He is me. And you. Thanks Dan.
