happy 4th of july 2016

What can you say about the 4th of July? Not much in a land that does not prize its freedom.

I decided to help you “celebrate” the holiday by featuring one of the worst pieces of propaganda music ever produced by the federal government, “The Road is Open Again,” which accompanied the passage in 1933 of the National Industrial Recovery Act, which was a law passed by the Congress to authorize the President to regulate industry in an attempt to raise prices after severe deflation and stimulate economic recovery. It was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1935 and not replaced.

This song is so obscure, it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry—yet it was much-ballyhooed at the time it was written. Like many “patriotic songs” of old, it is an embarrassment today.
