death dream

dead body.

I don’t have nightmares, and look forward to the entertainment value of an active dream life. Yet last night I had such a weird dream, I feel compelled to write about it this morning. To my knowledge, it’s the first time I’ve ever had a dream with such a “twist.”

In short, I dreamed that I had died. This in itself is not unusual—according to one website I consulted, dreams about one’s death are one of the most common subjects reported by people. But in this dream, I had morphed into two identical people, and one of us had died. We were lying in the same bed—I was not afraid, and felt a certain intimacy with my dead half-self—and then I was actively arranging my dead half on the mattress.

Seeing one’s self in dreams about death is considered particularly auspicious. To dream that you die symbolizes that inner changes, transformation, self-discovery, and positive development are happening within you or your life—a transitional phase in which you are becoming more enlightened or spiritual. It is believed that the symbolism of death actually means that life’s difficulties will be overcome.

Whereas most people fear that the dream may come true, to die in a dream is no cause for alarm. Dreams of experiencing your own death usually means that big changes are ahead. These changes do not necessarily imply a negative turn of events. Metaphorically, dying can be seen as an end or a termination to your old ideas, ways, and habits. Dying in your dreams can mean that you are about to embark on some new life adventure.

We see death all around us: the death of the old year gives way to the birth of the new, the death of winter leaves pave the way for the birth of spring, the death of a crumbling old building allows a new one to be built in its place, the death of a relationship that is no longer working for either partner eventually opens the way for you both to begin new relationships, and so on. Death dreams are about change. For change to happen, we need to end old attitudes, old ways of being or old beliefs, because otherwise these old ways are in the way of the new. The economist Joseph Schumpeter called it “creative destruction.”

The question remains: what changes are coming in my future? I simply don’t know. But the positive thing is, my dreams are telling me there is a future in store for me. So I guess the posts are still coming for some time to come.
