my little red book

The 1966 radical reworking of the Burt Bacharach – Hal David song by the Los Angeles-based band Love. The song title is likely a tongue-in-cheek reference to Mao Zedong’s Little Red Book.

Back in my student radical days in the late 1960s and early 1970s, all sorts of Marxist-Leninist and other Leftist ideological currents were openly advocated and debated on campus. In New York we even had several rather absurd Maoist groups. Especially amusing were the extra-hard-line Maoists, who actually wore Mao jackets and caps (like the ones pictured) and chanted silly slogans, badly translated from the original Chinese, while waving their Little Red Books. My friends and I used to taunt them with this chant:

    Bullshit! Cow Dung!
    Advance the thought
    Of Mao Tse-tung!

[We hadn’t yet adopted the pinyin spelling of Mao’s personal name]
