final wing-ding

jazzfuneral - luke fontana.

It is a shame that we don’t enjoy the biggest bash that’s usually thrown for us: our own funerals.

In the 2009 sleeper film, Get Low, hermit Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) decides to do things differently. No one really knows Felix and rumors in his backwoods Georgia town surround him, such as how he might have killed in cold blood, and that he’s in league with the devil. So the town is surprised when he shows up in town with a fat wad of cash, requesting a “funeral party” for himself. He recruits Frank (Bill Murray), the local funeral director, to host his funeral while he’s still alive. This way he can hear what everyone is saying about him, and get the truth of his past out in the open.

Spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable, and real-life legend, the film is loosely based on a true story that happened in Roane County, Tennessee, in 1938. Duvall’s character was based on a real person named Felix Bushaloo “Uncle Bush” Breazeale.

We live in such a death-avoiding society, I doubt that most of us would have the courage to throw a funeral party while we’re still alive. But it’s an intriguing thought to know who would show up.
