happy winter solstice 2014

sunrise -early risers

The Solstice occurs today at  5:03 pm central standard time.

It hardly seems possible that the sun has finally ended its annual southern journey (with progressively shorter days) and now turns northward again (with longer days to come).

I wasn’t planning on doing anything special for the Solstice until Friday, when I received an unexpected visit from Mike Dahl and his wife Lindsay, his parents Jon and Carol, and their son Michael who came up to Estrella Vista to invite me for Christmas dinner. Mike, as you may recall, is the now-grown Minnesota high school student who recognized me at the Grub Shack after more than 20 years.

So I invited them to join me tonight for a traditional Solstice bonfire and refreshments. Now there is an added excuse to light the Julleuchter and celebrate.

PS: The night was perfect (if a little breezy) with very mild temperatures. The table was well-stocked, too, with a ham, cole slaw, potato chips and dip, and cookies (some supplied all the way from Canada by a particularly thoughtful reader of the Diary). A beautiful fire. It goes without saying that the company couldn’t have been better. My neighbors Bill and Aliana even walked up and joined us. And everyone was home by 9:00! A perfect evening all around.
